MaxMara Takes L.A., By Day And By Night

MaxMara had its eye on the red carpet for last night’s Crystal Lucy Awards, where the brand presented Zoe Saldana with its Face of the Future Award, but the festivities began long before the sun set: On Tuesday afternoon, the label treated a few key L.A. ladies to a chic lunch benefiting the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Katherine Ross, gallerist Karyn Lovegrove, and MaxMara’s Nicola Gerber Maramotti hosted guests like Rachel Griffiths, Lisa Love, and Shiva Rose (all in MaxMara or Sportmax, of course) to an outdoor feast of striped bass and panna cotta at Lovegrove’s stunning Hancock Park estate; shut your eyes and you could believe you were in the Italian countryside. At least one guest soon would be—”We’re getting ready to go to Tuscany in two weeks, and hopefully I’ll be in Paris for couture,” reported Rosetta Getty (pictured, left, with Griffiths)—but when you call L.A. home, you don’t need to go far for fun in the sun. “After living here for four and a half years, I’m really enjoying all that Los Angeles has to offer,” said Ross, whose husband, Michael Govan, is LACMA’s popular director.

Dong Jie In Louis Vuitton – Louis Vuitton Store Opening

Dong Jie joined several stars who attended a Louis Vuitton cutting ribbon ceremony to mark the opening of another store in Asia last night.

The beautiful actress wore a Louis Vuitton Fall 2011 dress.

Her black sheer dress wasn’t presented on the runway, but we can see that Look 58 has the closest resemblance.

I actually prefer the shorter version.

It’s chic and more wearable with the addition of a short strapless dress underneath.

Dong Jie wore black pumps and carried a Louis Vuitton clutch heavily embellished clutch to completed her look.

Buck Wild For Katie Gallagher

“My uncle shot a deer and sent me the hide,” says designer Katie Gallagher, as she filches a cropped bomber jacket with an undulating silhouette from a rack of Spring 2010 looks. “See,” she goes on, holding up the jacket, “you can still see the bullet holes!” Fashion weekers on the hunt not for buck, so much, as for promising new talent, should make space in their schedule for Gallagher’s presentation on Saturday. The RISD grad is relatively fresh off a stint working with Threessfour, the influence of which adds a cool fluidity to her own sculpturally gothic look. The Spring collection, Gallagher’s second, is all black, though that’s not something she sees as being typical. “My last collection was all whites and grays and beiges,” she explains, “and this one started out as, you know, the flip side of that. But then it changed.” Leather is another leitmotif, though only that bomber-jacket sample is worked with bullet holes; elsewhere, Gallagher goes for futuristic, almost furlike laser-cut leather, or a stretchy hide she’s turned into a minidress, its cut distilled from a more directional piece with padded balloon sleeves. “We’re going for total drama at the show,” she notes, “I mean, you want to make a statement. You want to come out with a bang.”

Jessica Lowndes’ Emmy’s Party Weekend

After wowing us on the red carpet at the 2010 Entertainment Weekly And Women In Film Pre-Emmy Party this weekend wearing an adorable red Luisa Beccaria dress, Jessica then went onto 3 other events this Emmy weekend.

She started off at The Art Of Elysium’s 2nd Annual “Genesis” Event.

Unfortunately for her the black background made it hard to make out much of the details on her beautiful black one shoulder cocktail Paule Ka dress.

This dress is ironically from Paule Ka’s ‘Black Carpet’ collection.

On the model you can clearly make out a bow on the waist, but not so much on Jessica.

Jess paired her look with black Sergio Rossi pumps, a black clutch and green Rina Limor drop earrings.

A black dress paired with green earrings continues to be a red carpet trend.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus sported this combination at the Emmys this weekend.

At the 8th Annual BAFTA/LA TV Tea Party the star arrived wearing an Alice + Olivia high waisted polka dot skirt from the Fall 2010 skirt with a black Topshop scoop neck vest.

Her look was paired with a black clutch, Scott Mikolay jewels, a Topshop sequin leaf headband and those Sergio Rossi heel again.

This is a fresh, cute and utterly charming look.

The final stop this weekend was AMC’s Emmy Awards After Party.

Jessica’s looked angelic wearing a Diane von Furstenberg Fall 2010 strapless dress.

The dress had been slightly modified from the runway to give more coverage on the bust.

This time she swapped her black Sergio Rossi heels for grey ones to match her dress.

What I love most about this dress, is the rosette detail on the skirt which is cleverly worked into the dress.

An Arianne Tunney silver clutch and Miriam Salat jewels completed her look.

Of all these looks her DVF dress is my favourite, but the Luisa Beccaria dress is my favourite overall.

Julia Nobis | Marcs campaign

Shooting star . . . Sydney's Julia Nobis also appeared for Chanel.

Shooting star . . . Julia Nobis.

As one of the fashion world’s people to watch, a Sydney girl is living in a fairytale, writes Kellie Hush.

Once upon a time, there was a 17-year-old teenager catching the bus in Bondi Junction. She was hanging with her mates, keeping out of trouble, sharing a few laughs. Then a stranger tapped her on the shoulder.

“It was a little bit awkward. I thought she was just going to ask me for directions but she asked me if I was I model. Who knew a bus stop could be a place of magic?” recalls Julia Nobis, now 19, who today is shooting her second campaign for Australian fashion label Marcs on the streets of Sydney’s Woolloomooloo.

The stranger was Jaz Daly from Priscillas Model Management. “I immediately noticed her beautiful pale skin and the blonde hair,” Daly recalls of the day she scouted Nobis.

Shooting star . . . Julia Nobis on location for the Marcs campaign.

“She looked so angelic, even though she was in big, baggy pants and carrying a skateboard. She was actually in her school uniform but you could tell she had something straight away.”

The 180-centimetre beauty was also very studious and it was made clear, not just by her parents but by Nobis herself, that she wanted to concentrate on finishing school first, Daly adds. “We took it easy and in her spare time she would do a couple of shoots.”

In February last year, the recent high school graduate was on a plane to New York, where she was hired immediately to star exclusively in the Calvin Klein show, a massive coup for any model.

By the end of the year, she had starred on the runway for Louis Vuitton, Top Shop and Burberry Prorsum, posed for Prada, Alexander Wang and Vogue Australia and Italia and starred in campaigns for Burberry Black Label and Marcs. Right now she is in Paris with the beautiful people, preparing for the winter haute couture shows.

Marcs was lucky enough to sign Nobis before her international career took off. In between studying for her HSC, Nobis did a fashion shoot for small Australian fashion magazine Russh. Nobis was free of make-up and looking pretty grungy but the team at Marcs saw something fresh and different. “We didn’t want the carbon-cut-out model face,”Marcs womenswear designer Rachel Allen says.

“It’s important to push the boundaries on the brand image when it comes to photography and the models. For us, Julia was a risk because she had only done one season and she’s not your Aussie typical girl – she’s tall, pale and blonde but also incredibly beautiful. People within our business did ask if we were sure, and we were sure.”

Today is day two of work and she’s still model perfection for top international photographers Knoepfel and Indlekofer, a little shy and a lot overwhelmed by how her career’s taken off.

Rosamund Pike In Christopher Kane – “Barney’s Version” New York Premiere

British actress Rosamund Pike dazzled on the red carpet at the “Barney’s Version” New York Premiere last night.

She looked sexy wearing a Christopher Kane galaxy print dress from the Resort 2011 collection.

The edgy silk empire line dress with a black leather yoke was toned down with black tights and black pumps.

Wavy blonde locks, a large spike ring and an Alexander McQueen python skull clutch completed her look.

Surprisingly I don’t mind the tights on this occasion.

37th Annual FiFi Awards

The FiFi Awards, is fragrance industry’s equivalent to the Oscars, where Paris Hilton was honoured with “Female Celebrity Fragrance of the Year” award last night.

This is the first time in a long time that I love what Paris is wearing.

Out goes the billowing dresses, and jeweled headbands, and in comes this Georges Chakra Fall 2009 Couture purple dress, with draping, navy bows and jewel encrusted details.

She completes the look with her favourite Gina heels.

Who would have thought Queen Latifah and Paris Hilton, would share the same taste in designer?

Queen Latifah befit her regal name, by looking breath-taking wearing a charcoal grey lame dress, from Georges Chakras’ Fall 2009 ready-to-wear collection.

I love the sleeve that drapes over her shoulder, and the smokey eyes.

Along with Paris, she is up for Best Dressed of The Week.

Senior Vice President & Creative Director of Estee Lauder, Aerin Lauder, opted for a blue Lanvin leopard print dress.

This is not an easy look too pull off, but I would have worn it without the belt.

Mary J Blige wore a watercolour print Roberto Cavalli maxi dress, with the signature gold serpent.

Her gold drop, emerald stone earrings, complemented the look perfectly.

Hilary Rhoda wore a beige strapless fitted Jacques Fath dress, with a peplum at the waist, plus an origami pleated detailing trimming the neckline.

As much as I love her dress, I also love her gold chandelier earrings, and her black Jimmy Choo strappy sandals.

Unfortunately Kate Walsh’s look is really not working for me.

Not the lurex pink Hugo Boss dress, nor the hairstyle.

Viola Davis In Juan Carlos Obando – 2012 Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon

Neon pink is fast becoming Viola Davis’ favourite colour during her spectacular run on the red carpet recently.

The actress joined many other stars at The Beverly Hilton hotel in California today for the 84th Academy Awards Nominations Luncheon.

On this occasion she wore a hot-pink Juan Carlos Obando dress, but we’ve seen her in pink before at the ‘Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close’ New York Premiere and W Magazine’s Annual Golden Globe Awards Celebration.

It’s no wonder she loves this colour so much, as it’s very warm and complementary against her skin tone.

Whilst Rooney Mara has given us just two different hairstyles this awards season, Viola sports yet another chic do.

This bang-sweeping crop is one of my favourites from her. It’s modern without making her look like she tried too hard.

Jimmy Choo triple-strap peep-toes completed her look.

On Our Radar: Lanvin Embroidered Tie Pins

I was barely over my love for Lanvin’s Fall 2010 womenswear when the label’s men’s accessories catalog found its way to my desk. Here we go again. I love the direction Alber Elbaz and Lucas Ossendrijver, the steward of Lanvin’s menswear, are going. Their ready-to-wear had a more military cast than usual this Fall, but in the accessories, the duo picked up the more tribal beat Elbaz explored in women’s. Fuzzy patchwork bags and Frankenstein-ed ties—made of several different fabrics stitched together—play up the theme, but my personal favorites are these embroidered tie pins, whose totemic little faces put them somewhere between Mexican Day of the Dead dolls and shrunken heads. (Voodoo CEOs, note that they’re also available as cuff links.) One would look great tacked onto a dark, slim tie, but just as good, girls, pinned to the lapel of a boyfriend blazer.
